Bark River Knives: Custom Skinner
The Bark River Knives 2009 Custom Skinner has been Designed as the Ideal Compact Belt Knife for all around Hunting Chores. The 5 inch Blade with it's Long Clip works very well as a hunting knife for both Field Dressing Small, Medium and large Game and really shines in all Skinning Tasks.
Mike Stewart said, "We need to make very clear that this design dates back to the Pattern commonly called a "Buffalo Skinner". That name sounds limiting but the name is deceptive. This is not a pure skinner. It's point is not above the line of the spine that is actually typical of PureSkinners."
This is a great all around field knife that has the Old Classic name of a Skinner.
The name really Stuck in the 1950s.
Yes - 1950s.
As Germany started up their Post War Export Industry the Solingen Makers all began to make a number of Patterns in a number of Sizes. One of them was this "Buffalo Skinner".
They made them from 3 inch Blades to Massive 12 Inch Versions.
The Bark River version differs from those. They did have the point even with or above the line of the spine and instead of the nice rounded hump of the BRKT pattern they had a large projection that looked more like a pronounced Thumb Ramp - some of them were even grooved or serrated.
They were dramatic looking but not as comfortable in use or as versatile as the Bark River Knife with the lower point.
A good number of makers have made this pattern and made it their own. Ralph Bone - Bo Randall - Charlie Huske and many more.
The Root Design is also the one that Schrade Adapted for their "Golden Spike Hunter".
Even the custom knifemaker, Bob Loveless made a few in his early days.
